Great Hallingbury Manor Hotel - Surya Hotels

Great Hallingbury, Bishop's Stortford CM22 7TJ, UK – 01279 506475

Very pretty but noisy too. The place has decent large rooms. The outside bit of the hotel offers a pleasant walk around the pond. The check-in people are also pleasant. But the noise from the airplanes can't be understated as the hotel is directly under their flight path. For a short night break it is perfect. But for longer stays the noise might get to you.

This appears a charming little hotel with a quiet country setting yet easily and conveniently accessible from the M11. The location is indeed nice looking, however the peace and quiet is regularly breached by aircraft heading into or out of nearby Stansted. The planes are at very low altitude as they pass over, and although earplugs are supplied, it's hard to ignore the noise. There are rooms in both the main building and additional rooms across the road in a converted cottage. The rooms are not very big and ceilings are low due to the old building. Sad say my room was not only a little dusty in places, but also had a broken wardrobe and shower in need of maintenance. Bed was comfortable however and road/aircraft noise not as bad with the secondary glazing closed. If the room had been cleaned and looked after it would have been fine. Breakfast was OK but nothing to rave about: Taste was alright but perhaps not the most appealing or the widest choice. Very ordinary bread, odd-looking scrambled eggs which I avoided. I was not sure about awarding 3* for this hotel, but on balance the attitude and helpfulness of the staff brings this up from a 2*. Overall I wouldn't stay here again because I don't believe it's good value.

London Stansted Airport

Bassingbourn Rd, Stansted CM24 1QW, UK – 0808 169 7031

Credit where credit is due. My friend and I had a good journey today with minimal queuing at Stansted and pleasant staff. Mid stay car park female shuttle bus driver welcomed us. Security made obvious effort to get people effectively through. I do hope my return will be as good! P. S. Return was good as well! Amazing but should not be a surprise as should actually be consistently so.

The check in processes are there but this airport is pretty crowded. Queues snake around instead of standing in one long one Q, unfortunately. You need plenty of time to check and clear your luggage and go through immigration control. Plenty of shops before you board your plane. However, the check-in process was so slow that we didn't have time to even visit the shops as we lack the time. If only the airport authorities have devoted more space to the passengers in the checking in area to make their experience more comfortable, it would not be such a hassle. Look at Singapore Airport as an example. They provide spacious area in order not to stress the checking-in passengers further. Be careful of declaring any small items containing handcreams, etc in a see-through plastic bags (provided) as you would be delayed at immigration which will consume your energy.
